The Luna moth usually lays about 200 eggs on a Black Maple leaf. The moth is in the egg for about 12 to 14 days. The Luna moth caterpillar changes skins like a snake. When the old skin gets too tight then the caterpillar sheds and the new skin is right underneath waiting to be used. The caterpillar stays a caterpillar for about 3 and 1\2 to 4 weeks. The nit builds a cocoon. The catterpillar is in it's cocoon for about 2 to 3 weeks. When the moth wants to come out it makes this sort of juice that lets it out. The juice softens the cocoon and makes it easy for the moth to just push out. When the moth gets out it takes about 20 minutes for the wings to get dry. After those 20 minutes the Luna moth gets up and flies off. Since the Luna moth does not have a mouth, it only lives for about a week.
